 EDUCATING OUR YOUTH ABOUT THE WAR OF 1812
 TO GEOFFEY HAMMERSLEY
STATE OF MARYLAND

Geoffrey's Project, A Virtual Tour of 1812 Sites in Our Backyard, is the result of his having researched sites specific to the War of 1812 "in our area (Maryland)". A copy of his research is being recorded on a DVD which will be made available to middle and high students and on line. Mary Pat Berry of the Virginia Houck Holloway Chapter received a Southern Maryland Heritage Area Mini Grant in the amount of $500.00 which was doubled by donations from sister organizations and used to finance the research undertaken by Geoffrey Hammersley's research project.

Geoffrey Michael Hammersley was born in Washington, D.C. in 1994. He is a junior at La Plata High School in La Plata, MD. Geoffrey is a member of the Student Government Association, Key Club, World Language Honor Society and Marching Band. He is also a member of the Charles County Honor Band and Tri-County Honors band. His hobbies include playing the piano, clarinet and Play Station video games. He is learning film editing. He would like to attend Ohio State University after graduating from high school.

STUDENT AWARDS

Each year U.S.D. of 1812 presents awards to students ages 9-14 who write essays not exceeding 500 words in length on topics related to the War of 1812. These topics may include biographies, battles and historical sites.

First Place Winner: Davis Arthur," The Creek War, A War of 1812 Civil War which Transformed America." Davis is a 5th. grader from Vestavia, Alabama. He was sponsored by the Alabama Charter Chapter.
